Crockett was named for the famed Tennessee scout and national hero Davy Crockett, who camped in this area while on his way to the Alamo. The town was incorporated in 1837. Houston County also has a history of Native American culture and warfare.
During the Civil War, Crockett served as a mustering point and training center for Confederate troops. In 1872, the Houston and great Northern Railroad was built through Houston County. Also of interest are the 1909 Crockett Railroad Depot and Visitor Center Museum, the Rice Log Cabin, the Monroe-Crook House, the Crockett Civic Center, the Ritz Theater and more.

The climate varies from hot and humid along the Gulf Coast to cool and dry in the upper reaches of the Guadalupe Mountains. Even though nighttime lows in most places are in the low 70s, you may want a sweater when you're visiting the far north or mountains. In south Texas, winters are usually quite pleasant, ranging from freezing to 70 degrees.

educational needs are served by Angelina Community College, Trinity Valley Community College, Texas A&M University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Sam Houston State University. There are also 4 rural health clinics and county emergency services.
Davy Crockett National Forest offers 160,000+ acres of woods, streams and wildlife habitat. Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, built in 1936, surrounds a 45-acre lake and is the starting point for the Four C National Recreation Trail.
Big Slough Wilderness Area is along the Neches River while the Piney Creek Horse
Trail features 45+ miles of developed horse trails. Hunting is also very popular
here in the national forests and grasslands. A great variety of fishing opportunities are found at Toledo Bend, Lake Sam Rayburn, Lake Conroe and smaller recreation lakes as well as the Neches, Angelina and San Jacinto rivers and many streams.
