Crockett was named for the famed Tennessee scout and national hero Davy Crockett, who camped in this area while on his way to the Alamo. The town was incorporated in 1837. Houston County also has a history of Native American culture and warfare.

During the Civil War, Crockett served as a mustering point and training center for Confederate troops. In 1872, the Houston and great Northern Railroad was built through Houston County. Also of interest are the 1909 Crockett Railroad Depot and Visitor Center Museum, the Rice Log Cabin, the Monroe-Crook House, the Crockett Civic Center, the Ritz Theater and more.

The climate varies from hot and humid along the Gulf Coast to cool and dry in the upper reaches of the Guadalupe Mountains. Even though nighttime lows in most places are in the low 70s, you may want a sweater when you're visiting the far north or mountains.  In south Texas, winters are usually quite pleasant, ranging from freezing to 70 degrees.

Area attractions include the Houston County Fair, rodeos, circuses and more. Local festivals include the World Championship Fiddler's Festival, a Gospel Festival, Bluegrass Festival, Heritage Days Festival, Peanut Festival, etc. Also of interest are the 1909 Crockett Railroad Depot and Visitor Center Museum, the Rice Log Cabin, the Monroe-Crook House, the Crockett Civic Center, the Ritz Theater and more.
